A Qualitative View Of Clouds In The Equatorial Trough Zone
نویسنده
چکیده
Oceanic tropical clouds are observed to occur at various length scales over the equatorial trough zone (an area around the intertropical convergence zone or ITCZ). As one proceeds from the subtropics towards the equator, the cloud types range from small stratocumulus, small cumulus (including trade cumulus), cumulus, cumulonimbus (isolated) and large mesoscale convective systems (MCSs)with a corresponding increase in the sea surface temperature (Fig. 1). Satellite observations of clouds and precipitation measurements from the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) satellite data indicate that the location of the ITCZ coincides with the region of maximum solar heating or warmest sea surface temperature (SST) and lies north of the equator by a few degrees latitude (during northern hemisphere summer). The ITCZ is itself composed of cumulonimbus clouds and MCSs and represents the rising branch of the Hadley cell. Pole ward of the ITCZ in association with the descending branch of the Hadley cell and colder SSTs, cloud populations are characterized by the presence of stratocumulus, trade cumulus and small cumulonimbus clouds.

Laminar Flame Speed Prediction in Lean Mixture of Aluminum Dust Clouds by Considering the Effect of Random Distribution of Particles in Two-dimension
In the present study, the effect of random distribution of reactants and products on laminar, 2D and steady-state flame propagation in aluminium particles has been investigated. The equations are solved only for lean mixture. The flame structure is assumed to consist of a preheat zone, a reaction zone and a post flame zone. It is presumed that in the preheat zone particles are heated an...
متن کاملDetermination of settlement trough width and optimization of soil behavior parameters based on the design of experiment method (DOE)
The expansion of the settlement trough is an important factor in the risk assessment of the tunneling induced settlement. The increase of settlement trough requires buildings to be included in the impact zone, which causes damages. This paper conducts estimation of the settlement trough width (STW) using empirical approaches, field measurement data and numerical solutions. The credibility of th...
متن کاملLarge-Scale Atmospheric Forcing by Southeast Pacific Boundary-Layer Clouds: A Regional Model Study
A regional model is used to study the radiative effect of boundary layer clouds over the Southeast Pacific on large-scale atmosphere circulation during August–October in 1999. With the standard settings, the model simulates reasonably well the large-scale circulation over the eastern Pacific, precipitation in the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) north of the equator, and marine boundary la...
متن کامل3D Detection of Power-Transmission Lines in Point Clouds Using Random Forest Method
Inspection of power transmission lines using classic experts based methods suffers from disadvantages such as highel level of time and money consumption. Advent of UAVs and their application in aerial data gathering help to decrease the time and cost promenantly. The purpose of this research is to present an efficient automated method for inspection of power transmission lines based on point c...
متن کاملLocal and remote atmospheric response to tropical instability waves: A global view from the space
A La Niña took place in the equatorial Pacific in 1999, and strong tropical instability waves (TIWs) developed, causing large meanders of a sea surface temperature (SST) front between the equator and 3◦N. High-resolution satellite measurements are used to describe the variability of SST, surface wind velocity, column-integrated water vapor, cloud liquid water and precipitation associated with t...
